House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo
Massachusetts House of Representatives
24 Beacon St. Room 356
Boston, MA 02133

Dear Speaker DeLeo,

The Welcome Home Coalition is a Massachusetts-based partnership of housing and community groups that believes short-term rentals should benefit Massachusetts home owners and renters. We want to preserve the ability for Massachusetts residents to rent out their home, while prohibiting commercial developers and out-of-state investors from taking advantage of our welcoming spirit.

To be clear, we do not oppose the ability of Massachusetts residents to rent out the home in which they live.

The Welcome Home Coalition supports Representative Michlewitz’s proposed Bill H. 4287 in its current form. The current bill gives cities and towns important tools to shape regulations that reflect the specific needs of that municipality. Thousands of rental units have been taken off the market by short term rentals already. In light of the housing crisis gripping many communities, we ask that the legislature maintain these essential “local option” tools within the final version of the bill.

We welcome the opportunity to work with you and your staff on this or other issues of mutual concern. Please do not hesitate to call upon us should be of any assistance.
